Types of Music Therapy

Guided Listening Therapy What it is: The therapist selects music that matches the client’s emotional state and slowly guides them into calmer or more empowered emotional patterns. What it does: Reduces anxiety Helps regulate emotions Improves focus Who it helps: Clients dealing with depression, trauma responses, and overthinking.

Music-Making / Instrument-Based Therapy What it is: Clients use drums, keyboards, guitars, or digital pads to express feelings through sound. What it does: Releases built-up emotional tension Builds confidence Supports emotional expression when words are difficult Who it helps: Clients who shut down, struggle to talk, or have anger, grief, or emotional numbness.

Songwriting & Lyric-Based Therapy What it is: Clients work with the therapist to write original lyrics or rewrite lyrics to meaningful songs. What it does: Turns pain into purpose Helps clients tell their own story safely Builds self-identity and meaning Who it helps: Survivors of trauma, grief, and major life changes — especially teens and young adults.

Vocal Tone & Breath Therapy What it is: Using humming, singing, chanting, and guided breathing with sound. What it does: Regulates the nervous system Lowers stress and heart rate Helps restore emotional grounding Who it helps: Clients with anxiety, PTSD, anger management, and sleep issues.

Rhythmic Entrainment (Beat Therapy) What it is: Therapist uses rhythmic patterns and beats to synchronize brain and body rhythms. What it does: Stabilizes mood Calms the fight-or-flight response Improves focus and clarity Who it helps: Clients with ADHD, trauma triggers, emotional overwhelm, or mood swings.

Studio Performance & Confidence Building Sessions What it is: Clients practice performance skills in a safe, encouraging studio environment. What it does: Builds strong self-image Improves communication & presence Helps clients believe in their voice again Who it helps: Teens, young adults, and anyone rebuilding confidence.

What to Expect From Music Therapy

Everyone’s music therapy needs are different. At Me Living, we’re here to help you feel better along the way. 

A Safe, Calm, and Non-Judgmental Space You’ll be welcomed into an environment where you can relax, exhale, and simply be yourself. Your therapist will take time to understand your energy, emotions, and comfort level each day. You are always in control of your pace.

The Music Experience This is where emotional release and healing happen. During this part, you may: Create sounds or beats Listen to meaningful music Write lyrics or poetry Hum, sing, or vocal-tone Use rhythm to calm or energize the body This is not performance-based — it’s personal expression.

A Quick Check-In Your therapist will ask gentle questions like: “How are you feeling today?” “What emotions are sitting close to the surface?” “What would you like support with right now?” This helps shape the music experience to support your current emotional needs.

Emotional Reflection & Insight After the music experience, you’ll talk briefly with your therapist about: What came up emotionally What felt good or challenging How the music shifted your internal state This helps connect the music experience → real-life growth.

Choosing the Style of Session Your therapist may offer: Songwriting Guided listening Beat / rhythm work Instrument play Vocal and breathing exercises Music + movement/stretching You choose what feels right — or you explore together.

Closing Grounding Exercise Sessions end with calm breathing, quiet reflection, or gentle grounding music. This ensures you leave feeling: Calmer More centered More in control of your emotions

What happens during a session? Sessions may include: Listening to music that matches your emotional state Creating beats or rhythms Writing or rewriting lyrics Gentle vocal work or breathing with sound Movement or grounding exercises Your therapist guides you step-by-step. You’re never pushed — always supported.

Is this like regular therapy? Yes — but instead of talking the whole session, we use music to help emotions move. It works especially well for people who: Struggle to express feelings in words Shut down when talking about trauma Feel “stuck” emotionally

Do I need to bring anything? Yes. although check with staff instruments my be provided. You may bring songs or playlists that are meaningful to you if you’d like.

Can music therapy bring up strong emotions? It can — and that’s part of healing. Your therapist will support you and ground you so you finish calm, stable, and safe.

. What if I don’t have insurance yet? We can help you apply for: Medicaid Medicare Food assistance Disability benefits Many clients start services while their benefits are still processing.

Do I have to talk during the session? No. Some sessions involve talking, others are mostly music. You choose what feels safe for you.

How long is a session? Sessions are typically: Individual: 45–60 minutes Group: 60–90 minutes Telehealth sessions are also available if needed.

Is music therapy covered by insurance? Yes. We accept: Medicaid Medicare Most major private insurance plans Sliding scale & support available if uninsured

Who is music therapy for? Music therapy supports clients experiencing: Anxiety or stress Depression or emotional numbness Trauma / PTSD Grief & loss Anger or frustration Low self-esteem Difficulty expressing feelings It is age-friendly — adults, teens, and youth.

Can sessions be done virtually? Yes — we offer telehealth music therapy, including: Virtual beat-making Guided listening Lyric therapy Vocal & breathing work

How soon will I feel results? Most clients begin to feel changes in: Emotional release Mood stabilization Confidence Self-expression Within 3–6 sessions, with deeper transformation over time.

How many sessions can I take daily or weekly? Most clients attend 1–2 music therapy sessions per week, depending on their goals. However, some individuals who are in active healing, recovery, or emotional stabilization may benefit from more frequent sessions. We offer: Standard: 1 session per week Enhanced Support: 2–3 sessions per week Intensive Healing Track: Daily sessions (when clinically appropriate) Your therapist will work with you to decide what frequency is: Safe Supportive Effective And aligned with your mental and emotional capacity You will never be rushed or overwhelmed. We adjust the pace to your needs and how your mind and body respond. If you are feeling strong emotional shifts, grounding and integration time between sessions is recommended — and we make sure that support is steady and compassionate.
